Is a Great Dane the Right Dog for You?

Been thinking about a great dane for a while? Met one at an event and fell in love? Grew up with danes and now are ready for your own? That's AWESOME!!!

BUT are you SURE a great dane is the dog for you? Sure, we think they're great but they aren't for everyone. Here is some basic info about danes:

Considerations

Quick Info

More Info

Size

Giant

Average Shoulder height for females: 28-32 inches

Males:30-36 inches

Colors

Black, Fawn, Brindle, Blue, Harlequin, Merle, White, Mantle,

White danes are typically deaf. There are also variations of the harlequin in the various colors (merlequin, fawnaquin, porcelain, etc)

Energy Level

low-Medium

Most danes are laid back and require only a walk or two a day. Puppies and some adult danes can be high energy

Drool Factor

variable

Some danes have a very dry mouth while others can sling slobbers on the walls and ceiling

Need for Human Attention

High

Most danes, especially rescue danes, are very needy and expect and need lots of attention from their family. If neglected, they can be destructive and anxious.

Destructive danes, even puppies, can destroy couches, walls, doors, floors, beds. It is not only upsetting to return home to but it is expensive to replace.

Intelligence

medium

Danes tend to be self-serving in that they can easily learn how to gain access to food and couches but are not all that interested in thinking things through all of the time. There are exceptions to every rule, however, and many dane owners will swear that danes are very intelligent. If you're looking for working intelligence, consider a border collie or sheltie. If you're looking for silly, quirky dogs, danes will do!

Lifespan

Short

Average lifespan is 7-11 years, with some danes living to 12-13 yrs.

Temperament

easy going, silly

Danes can be laid back and easy going or worried and anxious, depending on breeding and environment. They have little awareness of their size and are famous for leaning in for pets and love.

Health

prone to multiple health issues

If no big health problems, danes still cost more in normal upkeep than most breeds. See a typical cost breakdown>>

Even young danes are prone to health problems that can result in big bills for their owners. OCD and HOD are common.

Common health problems include bloat, cardiomyopathy, wobbler's syndrome, cancer, spinal issues, allergies.

Expense

High

Vet and food bills are higher than average for danes. Giant size equals more meds and more food. Unfortunately, bills are typically high when a dane is sick.

We love our danes and we think they're the best dogs ever--great, even! And, if you're still interested in adopting a dane, great! Read on to find out how to start the adoption process>>
